Based upon looks, there seems to be no difference between a torte and a cake. However, though they are extremely similar, there are a few differences
Cakes, by definition, are a sweet food, made from a combination of ingredients, baked and then usually decorated. They are most often eaten for special occasions like birthdays, weddings, and congratulations celebrations. Some of the most popular flavors of cake are red velvet, chocolate and carrot cake.
Tortes, by definition, are a type of cake. They use higher quality ingredients. Their name is derived from the German word “torte”, which means cake. They are a European delicacy
Most of the well-known torte recipes are
Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest) - Germany.
Linzer Torte (or Linzertorte) is an Austrian torte with a lattice design on top of the pastry. It is named after the city of Linz, Austria
Princess Cake, Sweden
Dobos Torte, Hungary
Napoleon Torte, France
Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest) - Germany.
The dessert is not directly named after the black forest mountain range in south-western Germany but rather from the specialty liquor of that region known as Schwarzwalder Kirsch (Wasser) distilled from tart cherries
Linzer Torte (or Linzertorte)
The Linzer Torte is said to be the oldest cake in the world. For a long time a recipe from 1696 in the Vienna Stadt- und Landesbibliothek was the oldest one known.
The cake was originally called grön tårta (green cake), but was given the name prinsesstårta or "princess cake" because the princesses were said to have been especially fond of the cake.
The princesses were Princess Margaretha (1899–1977; later Princess Axel of Denmark), Princess Märtha (1901–1954; later Crown Princess of Norway), and Princess Astrid (1905–1935; later Queen of the Belgians)
Napoleon Torte, France
Under the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, several of the fanciest Parisian pastry shops appear to have sold the cake.
It was notable for its use of fine buttercream, which was very little known at the time. Cake fillings and frostings were usually made with cooked pastry cream or whipped dream. The chocolate buttercream and the batter of the cake were both invented by Jozsef C. Dobos
