Lipoic Acid
Lipoic acid is found in a wide variety of foods from plant and animal sources. Animal tissues with high lipoyllysine content (~1-3 μg/g dry wt) include kidney, heart, and liver, while lipoyllysine-rich vegetables include spinach and broccoli.
Lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing compound
that is absorbed from the diet and synthesized in mitochondria (Smith
et al., 2004). Upon entering cells, it can be reduced to the dithiol
form dihydrolipoic acid by the thioredoxin system (Smith et al., 2004).
Mechanism Of Lipoic Acid
Theory To Practice
Alpha Lipoic Acid: Decreases Blood Glucose Level
Alpha-lipoic acid has been used for years to treat peripheral neuropathy in Germany. However, most of the studies that have found it helps have used intravenous (IV) alpha-lipoic acid.
One study did find that taking alpha-lipoic acid for diabetic neuropathy reduced symptoms compared to placebo.
