Hormones Of Adrenal Cortex
Tadeus Reichstein, Edward C. Kendall, and Philip S. Hench received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1950).
Hans Selye was a pioneering endocrinologist and physiologist, best known as the “Father of Stress Research.”
He was the first scientist to systematically study how the body responds to stress and to show that stress leads to the release of hormones like cortisol from the adrenal glands.
Stress → Hypothalamus (CRH) → Pituitary (ACTH) → Adrenal Cortex → Cortisol → Body → Negative Feedback
Types of Stress Affecting Cortisol Release
-
Acute stress: Short-term rise in cortisol; adaptive and protective.
-
Chronic stress: Prolonged elevation of cortisol; can cause harmful effects such as:
-
Immunosuppression
-
Hypertension
-
Weight gain and insulin resistance
-
Sleep disturbances and mood disorders
