The Plant Patent Act of 1930 (United States) was the first law in the world to provide intellectual property protection for new plant varieties. It recognized plant breeders’ work as a form of invention deserving exclusive rights.
Supported by Luther Burbank, a famous American horticulturist whose breeding work influenced the law act was notable because it recognized plants as a type of patentable subject matter.
