Dr. Anthony Caplan, a Welsh physician working with coal miners in South Wales, first described the condition in 1953.
He observed that miners with rheumatoid arthritis developed unusual, round lung nodules on chest radiographs.
The first description is widely credited to Anthony Caplan. In 1953, he published the paper:
“Certain unusual radiological appearances in the chest of coal-miners suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.” — Thorax, 1953; 8(1):29–37
