Vitamin B12 And Intrinsic Factor
Work by Rosenberg, Herbert, and others pointed to the existence of a large intestinal receptor responsible for binding IF–B12, but its molecular identity remained unknown.
Intrinsic Factor, secreted by gastric parietal cells, binds to vitamin B₁₂ (cobalamin) in the stomach.
-
The IF–B₁₂ complex is essential for B₁₂ absorption in the terminal ileum.
-
Without this complex, B₁₂ cannot be absorbed effectively.
