Ritgens Maneuver

Ritgen, Ferdinand August Maria Franz von (1787–1867)

The Ritgen maneuver, a technique used in childbirth to control the delivery of the fetal head, was first described by Ferdinand August Maria Franz von Ritgen in 1855.

It involves using one hand to support the perineum while the other guides the fetal head, aiming to prevent perineal tears. Over time, the maneuver has been modified, with some variations being described as "modified Ritgen"

He first described the maneuver in a German magazine for "birth knowledge". His initial description involved placing fingers behind the anus and applying pressure to the forehead of the fetal head to facilitate and control its deliver.
